MLB Lines: Jo Jo Reyes' Blue Jays vs Cincinnati Reds and Mike Leake
Friday, June 17, 2011
by Frank Martin
The task for the struggling Toronto Blue Jays is a hard one. After dropping five of their last seven games, the Blue Jays have a rather daunting scheduling awaiting them. Toronto will open its 10-game road trip Friday with the opener of a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds.
With dates against the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals on the horizon, the Blue Jays better find the elixir for what is ailing them in a hurry. For its part, Cincinnati won five of its last seven, highlighted by a road sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Blue Jays LH Jo-Jo Reyes (2-5, 4.30 ERA) vs. Reds RH Mike Leake (6-2, 4.06 ERA)
After going 28 straight decisions without a victory, Reyes was doing his best to amass a streak in the other direction. Unfortunately for the 26-year-old hurler, that was short-lived as he saw his two-game winning streak go by the boards in his last start. Reyes allowed four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings in an eventual 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on June 10. Reyes is 1-1 with a bloated 6.28 ERA in three career starts against the Reds.
Leake has certainly righted the ship since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville. The 23-year-old overcame off-the-field issues and a demotion to the minors to collect himself. Since returning to the Reds, Leake has won three in a row and yielded six runs in four starts. In his last outing, Leake struck out a career-high eight in eight scoreless innings on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants.
Rookie Zach Stewart tossed seven solid innings in his major league debut on Thursday but settled for a no-decision. Adam Lind belted his third homer in as many games and Jose Bautista had a two-run single in the sixth inning during Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. For Bautista, the RBIs matched his total over the previous 12 games.
Reliever Casey Janssen was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right forearm. Infielder John McDonald is expected to be activated off the disabled list for Friday's game. He has been dealing with a strained right hamstring.
Cincinnati is relying heavily on its starting pitching. During the team's West Coast trip, the starters recorded all five of the victories with a 1.63 ERA. Toronto native Joey Votto had four hits – including a homer – during the last meeting between the teams two years ago. Votto is sitting on 99 career home runs. The Reds have stern tests on the horizon, with home dates against the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians as well as road series versus the Tampa Bay Rays, St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers.
Toronto fell for the first time in 17 home games against the Baltimore Orioles. The last time the Orioles emerged victorious in Canada was Aug. 7, 2009.
